A continuously variable transmission (CVT) skips fixed gears entirely, using a belt and a pair of variable-diameter pulleys to provide a stepless range of ratios — common in economy cars and hybrids because it lets the engine run at its most efficient rpm regardless of vehicle speed.
Why Manual Transmissions Nearly Disappeared
The decline wasn't gradual erosion so much as a cliff. Manual transmissions accounted for roughly 35% of new U.S. vehicle sales in 1980, fell to about 9% by 2006, and have sat below 1% since 2021, according to EPA Automotive Trends data. In cars built specifically for driving enthusiasts, the stick shift isn't dying at all — it's the mainstream sedan and crossover market that abandoned it first.
What Hypercars Do Instead

At one end sits the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut, which uses what might be the most unconventional gearbox ever put in a production car: the in-house-designed Light Speed Transmission (LST), a 9-speed unit built around seven wet, multi-disc clutches instead of a traditional dual-clutch layout. According to Koenigsegg's own technical materials, a standard DCT can only pre-select one gear in one direction — if a driver in 7th gear suddenly needs 4th for a passing maneuver, the transmission has to step down through 6th and 5th first. The LST's clutch arrangement lets it jump directly from any forward gear to any other, in a claimed two milliseconds, which is a meaningful part of how the Jesko Absolut posted a record-breaking 0-400-0 km/h run using a single engine and only rear-wheel drive.
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ takes a more conventional, if still extreme, path: a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission built to handle the W16 engine's enormous torque output while shifting quickly enough not to interrupt the car's acceleration through triple-digit speeds.
At the opposite end entirely, electric cars like the Rimac Nevera R mostly skip the transmission conversation altogether. Each of its four motors drives its wheel through a single-speed gearbox — there's no multi-gear transmission to shift at all, because an electric motor produces strong torque across such a wide rpm range that multiple gear ratios simply aren't necessary the way they are for a combustion engine. It's the same basic reason a manual-vs-automatic debate doesn't really apply to most EVs: there's nothing to manually shift, and nothing for an automatic to select between.
Where This Shows Up in More Ordinary Cars
The same underlying logic scales down to the daily drivers we've covered as well. The 2026 Ford F-150 runs all four of its gas and hybrid engines through a 10-speed automatic — a high gear count chosen specifically to keep the engine in its most efficient and most tractive range across everything from empty-bed highway cruising to towing near the truck's 13,500-pound maximum, a job a manual transmission would struggle to do as smoothly under sustained heavy load.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class pairs its engines with a 9-speed automatic, prioritizing the smooth, imperceptible shifts that fit a flagship sedan's isolating ride quality — the opposite priority from a Bugatti's dual-clutch, even though both are technically automatics. And the 2027 Toyota Highlander, in its move to a fully electric powertrain, follows the same path as the Rimac Nevera R: no traditional multi-speed transmission at all, just electric motors driving the wheels directly, in a segment where the outgoing gas and hybrid Highlanders relied on conventional automatics.
